Remnants Official Relisten: Episode 13. Leather Pocket Book
If you're relistening today, remember to tag it 'remnants or' so people who don't want to see it can block the tag!!
Tensions mouNt in the First and Last Place as the Apprentice's new perspEctive brings new challeNges in his relationship with Sir and the remnanTs themselves.
Transcript.
The institutions of British private schools have long been a source of my fascination. I grew up working class reading the Books Which Shall Not Be Named, and it was fascinating to me to hear people from across the pond assuming that all school experiences in the UK were similar to that.
Almost all politicians working at the highest levels of UK government went to private boarding schools, many of them having been to some of the most exclusive, most expensive, and the most famous in the world. These schools aren't shy about the ways in which they serve the status quo and help the privilege maintain their privilege. There were quotas on the number of Jewish students allowed to attend private schools in the UK right up until the 1960s, for example.
Many of them have scholarships and many now attempt to promote diversity amongst their student bodies, but these schools are still overwhelmingly white, and their students, simply by the fact the schools require fees to attend, come from far more well-off families than the majority of people in the UK.
If you liked this episode, consider signing up on Patreon to support the show! If I get 20 new supporters by the end of November, I'm going to make a fluff episode of Remnants to release after the end of S1.
